Summary

Make peace with food。
Free yourself from chronic dieting forever。
Rediscover the pleasures of eating。

The go-to resource--now fully revised and updated--for building a healthy body image and making peace with food, once and for all。

When it was first published, Intuitive Eating was revolutionary in its anti-dieting approach。 The authors, both prominent health professionals in the field of nutrition and eating disorders, urge readers to embrace the goal of developing body positivity and reconnecting with one's internal wisdom about eating--to unlearn everything they were taught about calorie-counting and other aspects of diet culture and to learn about the harm of weight stigma。 Today, their message is more relevant and pressing than ever。 With this updated edition of the classic bestseller, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch teach readers how to:

- Follow the ten principles of Intuitive Eating to achieve a new and trusting relationship with food
- Fight against diet culture and reject diet mentality forever
- Find satisfaction in their food choices
- Exercise kindness toward their feelings, their bodies, and themselves
- Prevent or heal the wounds of an eating disorder
- Respect their bodies and make peace with food--at any age, weight, or stage of development
- Follow body positive feeds for inspiration and validation

。 。 。 and more easy-to-follow suggestions that can lead readers to integrate Intuitive Eating into their everyday lives and feel the freedom that comes with trusting their inner wisdom--for life。

This book, and the concept of Intuitive Eating is life-changing! I have been working hard to adapt an IE lifestyle and ditch dieting forever。 So far, I feel so free and so much HAPPIER! This also helps with overall wellness and body acceptance。 If you are curious about IE, or just really sick of dieting, check this out!

Love this。 So many times I would smile while reading this as I recognized myself in the examples given。 Just ordered a copy (the one I read was from the library。) Highly recommend for anyone on the endless diet wheel。

Wow what an absolutely life changing book。 Not to mention a fantastic resource to keep coming back to again and again for help with certain areas。 The messages included in this book are so empowering and strengthening that I only wish I had known about it sooner。 It would have prevented a lot of disordered eating, guilt, and heart ache that I have experienced as a result from diet culture。 It analyzes all of the specific things that we do to put ourselves down and is inclusive of all genders and Wow what an absolutely life changing book。 Not to mention a fantastic resource to keep coming back to again and again for help with certain areas。 The messages included in this book are so empowering and strengthening that I only wish I had known about it sooner。 It would have prevented a lot of disordered eating, guilt, and heart ache that I have experienced as a result from diet culture。 It analyzes all of the specific things that we do to put ourselves down and is inclusive of all genders and body types without using any triggering language。 The body-gospel-truths throughout made my mouth drop open in surprise at the simplicity, such as: “The job of clothing is to fit the body, not the other way around,” And “You don’t have to like your body in order to respect it。” SO much wisdom is packed into bite-sized chunks that are easy to digest and implement into daily life。 I am now working on making changes to feel happier and better in a body that deserves respect。 。。。more

This is a great book to help break away from the diet mentality and focus on your body's intuition。 It explains why diets don't work and how they hurt our emotional and physical well-being。 This is a great book to help break away from the diet mentality and focus on your body's intuition。 It explains why diets don't work and how they hurt our emotional and physical well-being。 。。。more

Unbelievably important book for anyone who has ever judged themselves based on what the scales read that day, who thinks more about food and dieting on a given day than anything else。 Although this book is for everyone, it has something important to offer women about respecting ones body regardless of size and concentrating your precious energy and focus on the things that matter and in doing so we'll free ourselves diet mentality and find some peace。To quote Naomi Wolf "A culture fixated on fem Unbelievably important book for anyone who has ever judged themselves based on what the scales read that day, who thinks more about food and dieting on a given day than anything else。 Although this book is for everyone, it has something important to offer women about respecting ones body regardless of size and concentrating your precious energy and focus on the things that matter and in doing so we'll free ourselves diet mentality and find some peace。To quote Naomi Wolf "A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience。 Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women's history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one"。 。。。more

An essential and practical book to make peace with food, help you in your self-healing journey and reduce guilt around eating。 100% recommended。Although I have never followed specific diets, this book has helped me identify emotional eating patterns and ‘diet mentality’ thinking I’ve often had, which I wasn’t aware of。 A caveat and the reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars: it fails to mention how some foods now are designed to make you continue eating and, in a way, fool your satiety mechanisms。 An essential and practical book to make peace with food, help you in your self-healing journey and reduce guilt around eating。 100% recommended。Although I have never followed specific diets, this book has helped me identify emotional eating patterns and ‘diet mentality’ thinking I’ve often had, which I wasn’t aware of。 A caveat and the reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars: it fails to mention how some foods now are designed to make you continue eating and, in a way, fool your satiety mechanisms。 A small shortcoming in a well rounded book。 。。。more

I stumbled across 'Intuitive Eating' whilst feeling intensely guilty about something I ate: I googled 'how to stop eating sugar' and discovered the Intuitive Eating universe, complete with a myriad of books on the subject and coaches to guide you through the process。 I was intrigued: I don't want to continue living a life of constantly thinking and worrying about food。 I chose to read this it's the original and has been a best seller since it was written in 1995 (the year I was born!)。 I definit I stumbled across 'Intuitive Eating' whilst feeling intensely guilty about something I ate: I googled 'how to stop eating sugar' and discovered the Intuitive Eating universe, complete with a myriad of books on the subject and coaches to guide you through the process。 I was intrigued: I don't want to continue living a life of constantly thinking and worrying about food。 I chose to read this it's the original and has been a best seller since it was written in 1995 (the year I was born!)。 I definitely made the right choice: although by it's nature slightly repetitive, the book had me captivated throughout and the studies, anecdotes and logic used to prove their point was effective。 I am now committed to learning to be an Intuitive Eater as I truly believe this is the answer to my never-ending battle with eating。 。。。more

This is a very good book for guiding you to intuitive eating。 For me, however, it was not the main goal of reading it。 I was recommended to give it a go in order to understand my needs - when I want to eat, what I want to eat, etc。, since I’ve started having some kind of eating disorder and eating without hunger。Since I started reading this book, my nutrition has improved。 I started to pay more attention to food, my needs, my feelings - and this book helped me to go through this process。 Now I a This is a very good book for guiding you to intuitive eating。 For me, however, it was not the main goal of reading it。 I was recommended to give it a go in order to understand my needs - when I want to eat, what I want to eat, etc。, since I’ve started having some kind of eating disorder and eating without hunger。Since I started reading this book, my nutrition has improved。 I started to pay more attention to food, my needs, my feelings - and this book helped me to go through this process。 Now I am more attentive to my body signals, and to my surprise, most of the foods I choose are nutritiously rich foods。 Also, some foods I used to think were tasty and didn’t allow myself to eat or binged on them, turned out to be nothing special, therefore cravings for them have disappeared。I doubt all the stories in the book are true, but they became helpful examples of problems and recovery。 However, I give it 5* for actually managing to change thinking and give understandable viewpoint on food and push to change。 I’ve adapted certain viewpoints of this book and implement them in my life, as I find it more useful for me, combined with my other nutrition goals。 。。。more

I took my time working my way through the audiobook version, contemplating my eating history along the way。 It's thorough, kind, and an easy listen, and I think it's something that everyone who has ever struggled with their relationship with food in any way should read, especially before having kids。 I'd never thought about how my behavior and words around food might affect future kids (nor had I much contemplated how my parents' behavior affected me), and I'm so glad it's at least something tha I took my time working my way through the audiobook version, contemplating my eating history along the way。 It's thorough, kind, and an easy listen, and I think it's something that everyone who has ever struggled with their relationship with food in any way should read, especially before having kids。 I'd never thought about how my behavior and words around food might affect future kids (nor had I much contemplated how my parents' behavior affected me), and I'm so glad it's at least something that I will think about。 I wish the contents of this book was known and embraced by everyone; we'd all be better for it and would be accepting of many body types。 Whether or not this book changes my own relationship food, time will only tell。 But it certainly has the potential to。One thing that did stick out to me was that the book assumes a level of financial security that not all people have。 In order to intuitively eat whatever you want and to eat healthful foods, you have to be able to afford them。 They did not address at all any of the socioeconomic factors that might affect whether a person would be able to experiment with their food choices。 However, I'm not sure what they would say about the matter。 It's not a problem they can solve。 But at least acknowledging the place of privilege that the book and its ideas come from would've been a good start。 。。。more

Over the last few years I have been researching and reading about the anti or non diet movement。 Much of this book is repetitious if you are familiar with the theories and research against dieting and it's harms。 However, the book did provide some insight for me。 I appreciated some of the better ways to internally dialogue about eating。 I've stopped the diet mentality but probably haven't fully embracing what they call intuitive eating。 As with most non-fiction is could have been 1/3 or 2/3 shor Over the last few years I have been researching and reading about the anti or non diet movement。 Much of this book is repetitious if you are familiar with the theories and research against dieting and it's harms。 However, the book did provide some insight for me。 I appreciated some of the better ways to internally dialogue about eating。 I've stopped the diet mentality but probably haven't fully embracing what they call intuitive eating。 As with most non-fiction is could have been 1/3 or 2/3 shorter and just fine ;) 。。。more

Excellent book for anyone wishing to know how to improve your eating without dieting。 Listen to your body to know when you are hungry, stop when you are comfortably full and eat foods that satisfy you。 A little long for my taste, but I walked away with great principles to implement and understanding of why we eat (and crave) the way we do。

This could be useful to some - it would depend on how strong they were addicted to food because addictions include a physical component, e。g。 hunger hormones, so it is not all just in the head。

I don't know that I'm fully qualified to rate this book as I skimmed a lot of it。 The idea, I believe, is a very important one, and I am convinced to throw away dieting mentality。 I found myself holding to the ideas, because they are, like the title says, intuitive。 This is what our bodies were meant to do from the beginning。 The book itself seemed repetitive and I skipped a lot of the examples of clients they'd worked with。 I'm glad to have had gone through it though, I'm hoping it'll help me o I don't know that I'm fully qualified to rate this book as I skimmed a lot of it。 The idea, I believe, is a very important one, and I am convinced to throw away dieting mentality。 I found myself holding to the ideas, because they are, like the title says, intuitive。 This is what our bodies were meant to do from the beginning。 The book itself seemed repetitive and I skipped a lot of the examples of clients they'd worked with。 I'm glad to have had gone through it though, I'm hoping it'll help me on my journey with rediscovering the pleasure and satisfaction in food without guilt, and truly caring for my body。 。。。more

An important read for our society that's caught up in the diet mentality & negative body image expectations。 Finally a book that shows us a different way of looking at food & eating - that's backed by strong research。 I loved this book & what it had to say, but be prepared to dive in - it's a meaty read。 An important read for our society that's caught up in the diet mentality & negative body image expectations。 Finally a book that shows us a different way of looking at food & eating - that's backed by strong research。 I loved this book & what it had to say, but be prepared to dive in - it's a meaty read。 。。。more

This is not a book I ever would have thought I’d read; however, my favorite food blogger (https://www。melskitchencafe。com/) mentioned this in tandem with Beauty Redefined (https://www。morethanabody。org)。 I’m already totally on board with Beauty Redefined, so I thought I’d check this out。 I’m not a dieter and don’t ever plan on becoming one, and this book is definitely written for dieters。 The 13。5 hours of listening often had large chunks that didn’t even apply to me as it was talking about eati This is not a book I ever would have thought I’d read; however, my favorite food blogger (https://www。melskitchencafe。com/) mentioned this in tandem with Beauty Redefined (https://www。morethanabody。org)。 I’m already totally on board with Beauty Redefined, so I thought I’d check this out。 I’m not a dieter and don’t ever plan on becoming one, and this book is definitely written for dieters。 The 13。5 hours of listening often had large chunks that didn’t even apply to me as it was talking about eating disorders, dieting mentality, food police etc。 Besides feeling extremely hungry (or at least wanting to eat) each time I listened to this, I did enjoy it。I found chapters 2 & 3 very helpful and informative。 They talked about different kinds of eaters and introduced the principles of intuitive eating。 I’d recommend those two chapters to anyone wanting to check this out。 Chapter 3 is especially helpful as it gives an overview of each principle; as the reader you know which principles you’d like to gain a better understanding of。I did come away from chapters 6, 7, 9, & 10 wanting to listen to my body’s hunger and full cues better and have better peace with food, although I didn’t necessarily benefit from all of the examples and length。 Chapter 11 is probably one I should revisit as I recognized that I cope with my emotions using food and that’s something that I should not be doing。 Chapter 13 reminded me a lot of Beauty Redefined and I definitely came away feeling very grateful for my body and all that it allows me to do each and every day。 Lastly, chapter 15 was all about raising intuitive eaters。 Of course I want my kids to have a healthy relationship with food—especially in a world that places so much emphasis on bodies and food。 With that in mind, I came away feeling so grateful for how I was raised especially in terms of relationship with food and my body/body image。Overall I think I came away with some food for thought (ha!) and some good tools to implement for myself and family。 I think I’ll try and get a used copy of the book so I can physically look through it and revisit the parts I’d like to improve and skip the large sections that didn’t apply to me。If you’re looking to improve your relationship with food, I’d give this a try。 。。。more

I greatly appreciate the basis of this book - removing restrictions from eating, challenging diet culture, listening to your body, and enjoying your food! - but I found the book to become long and tedious。 I must also mention that there were a surprising number of punctuation, spelling, and grammar mistakes for book that’s been around so long and gone through multiple publications。

This was a journey。 I spent the first half of the book railing against everything it stood for, then had a conversation with a friend that helped me see it for what it was。 There are plenty of people who might benefit from this book and style of eating。 The way the authors present the information is a bit more incendiarily than necessary, but I suspect that is intentional。
